The Beggar's Babe

The bridge, from rain has dampened the walls and dirt, A mother,  and her child, not long on this earth, Settle there for the evening as darkness caresses the land, Child on her bosom, nourished by the woman who struggles to stand, And throughout the night, the infant wails with no end, Knotting the mother's chest, a life she can never mend, "E'ery baby cries," yet she feels in her broken chest, That her crying child knows, they'll ne'er have a home to rest.
