🕯 Brown Butter Bar 🕯
September 22nd, 2023 - August 10th, 2024
Brown Butter:
Train Cat Extraordinaire~
Brown Butter for long, Brutter for medium, and Brubs for short. Brutter is a demanding calico from the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama who had decided to adopt my husband and I in February of 2023.
I chose September 22nd as her birthday because her colouring reminds me of autumn and the 22nd was the autumnal solstice of 2022 (the year she was most likely born). Her fur patterns are also reminiscent of tiger stripes, which is funny considering 2022 was the year of the tiger (my birth year was year of the tiger as well).
She loves playing with dead critters, climbing trees (she's very good at it!), and often stands on her hind legs.
I call her my cat-sidhe beag, because I'm convinced she's a faery cat.
Brown Butter Bar, Brubs for short, Brutter for medium, was a sassy, silly, smart, and sweet calico cat.
Living in a small wooded neighborhood in Graysville, Alabama, Brutter was around five months old when she saw some humans rummaging around a vacant house. It was a warm day in February, the fourth, to be exact, and she was out and about, happy that the rain and sleet had let up for the day.
Screaming at the humans yielded a kick down of sandwich meat. Diving into and digging through the numerous trash bags crowding the front porch yielded dust, moldy trash, and plaster. She stuck around that day, supervising the humans' work.
One of the humans asked a neighbor lady about the little cat. She told them that the kitten was a stray who constantly tore through her trash. She'd even been planning on calling animal control to take the starving kitten. So the humans decided to take the cat instead.
Just as the sun was over the horizon and the humans were getting ready to leave, Brutter scampered off somewhere else. The disheartened humans resigned themselves to the truck, hoping the cat would be there tomorrow. But just as the truck backed out of the gravel driveway, the kitten trotted back out and plopped down on the driveway where the truck had been, making sure to give her leg a good lick. The truck stopped, and the humans got back out, two of them kneeling beside her and scratching behind her ears. "Her name's Brown Butter." One of them said while gazing into her greenish eyes glowing yellow in the sun.
They scooped her up and put her in a rickety cage in the truck. She was bewildered and anxious, yet she was curious of the new sights that were quickly passing through the windows.
Brutter was taken to a small farm full of dogs, pigs, goats, and to her disappointment, other cats. She was still in the cage set atop a bed in a mostly dilapidated mobile home. The human who named her, flicked a can of Friskies twice, opened it, and stuck it in the cage with her. Brutter quickly gobbled the food as a clowder of cats gathered around the cage, eyeing both the food and the newcomer. She growled and hissed when they'd get too close.
The next day, the human who named her, brought Brutter outside and let her out of the cage. The human was disheartened to watch the kitten take off into the woods after sniffing around a bit. However, it hadn't been long until the calico bounded back over to the human.
Brutter spent the next week adjusting to her surroundings, as well as growing closer to her name giver. Brutter would spend the cold nights curled up in the crook of the human's chest. When Brutter would venture out of the house in the middle of the night, the human would wake and follow her, keeping an eye on the adventurous cat. The human even ensured that Brutter wouldn't have to fight with the other cats over food.
Brutter eventually started making rounds in the mobile home, visiting with her name giver, and then soliciting the human with the dopey looking dog across the room for pets. The dopey dog had initially growled at Brutter, but the dog's human quickly taught her to be gentle and respectful towards the kitten.
