Pancake Mix Soup

Since it's about a week before we get more foodies, and we're at a train yard in the middle of nowhere with only a pocketful of change and bare bare minimum food, I figured I'd share what I cook during these situations.

What I've got available to me right now are a couple packs of ramen noodles, a little bag of instant rice pilaf, and a package of American cheese slices (which we'd spent most of our change on before walking out here). But the one lifesaving key ingredient I always keep at the bottom of my pack is a package of complete pancake mix. I find that it's more versatile than just plain flour, as in, I don't need to have quite so many other ingredients on hand to accomplish certain dishes. One of the dishes I utilize the pancake mix for is flour soup.

It goes by other names as well, such as toasted flour soup and browned flour soup. I'm not certain of its origins, though I suspect it's roots are Germanic.
Regardless, it's a souper (haha) simple process requiring only water, fat, and flour (or pancake mix).

My usual method is to put a bit of mix in my frying pan (maybe quarter cup? Just whatever feels right), heat it up over medium heat (which is a fun guessing game with a camp stove) for maybe a minute, drizzle on some oil (whatever I got at the time, vegetable, coconut, olive), continuously sift and mix until it browns up nicely, then add liquid.

I'll ordinarily add in some kinda noodle, so when it was ready for liquid, I poured in a cup of ramen, instant rice, and water I had set aside to soak. Blending the water and browned mix as the noodles and rice cooks, I add more water til I reach a satisfactory consistency. When the ramen and rice were softened, I added two slices of American cheese and stirred til melted.
I seasoned it with stir fry sauce, Cajun seasoning, sugar, a dollop of peanut butter (extra protein), and some field garlic (it's growing all over the place).

Ate it with the bag of mushed up leftover bread we got so as to conserve the still decent bread. Which, I prefer carrying tortillas, but the bread was cheaper at the store we were at.

Anyhow, here's to hoping to being better fed some other day soon~

Actually really delicious, but I wish I had some real fucking food
